Xenophobes must not be allowed to curtail right to free movement

“We are in favour of freedom of movement and equality of rights without any ifs or buts attached,” GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst affirmed in this afternoon’s European Parliament debate with Commissioner Reding on the right to free movement within the EU.

Ernst congratulated Bulgarian and Romanian citizens as limits applying to workers from those countries expired at the beginning of the year. However, the right-wing in some countries has reacted to lifting restrictions with habitual populism.

“Those spouting chauvinistic hate speech such as UK Prime Minister Cameron should be ashamed of themselves. There can be no discrimination on the basis of place of origin; this is a basic right and we support the Commission here,” she concluded.
