European lawyers launch manifesto to demand respect for social rights

The manifesto aims to raise awareness of the growing violation of fundamental social rights by the EU and its Member States as a result of policies to combat the financial and economic crisis.

European lawyers have raised the alarm about threats to social and labour laws from austerity policies in a manifesto that highlights an increase in complaints raised by European trade unions at the Committee on Freedom of Association of the International Labour Organization (ILO)

The manifesto, backed by the European trade union confederation-linked body, the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), notes that some of these complaints have been supported by this ILO Committee as well as the Council of Europe’s European Committee of Social Rights, in particular the measures imposed on Greek workers by the EU-IMF-ECB ‘Troika’.

The growing violation of fundamental social rights by the European Union and its Member States is being pursued in the name policies to combat the economic and financial crisis, say the lawyers, who argue for the full respect of workers’ rights as a pre-condition of any sustainable development in the region.
