Abolish the EU and fight for another Europe, says feminists

Feminists from France, Italy and Sweden have launched a call for the abolition of the EU and the creation of ‘another Europe’ ahead of European elections next month.

In a statement, Feminists Initiative of Sweden, a feminist electoral list in France and Italian women candidates joining a radical left ticket backing Greek opposition leader Alexis Tspiras for European Commission President argue that the European Union cannot be reformed because it is a “capitalist spider’s web” that “oppresses the people”.

“Thanks to globalized capitalism, the EU has won the ideological battle, generating feelings of helplessness and resignation. Its current geopolitical strategy strongly risks bringing war into the heart of Europe. Resistance has multiplied, however, this is all in vain if you do not have as the objective to open a breach in the EU, to smash its structures in order to dissolve it.”

“For this reason, we women, as the main targets of wars and economic and political decisions taken against the people, wish to reaffirm the importance of international solidarity in order to regain control of our destiny and to open a political, economic, social and cultural space founded on the principle of sharing. When you are up against the wall you can not turn back and so we need to find the courage to propose our own actions for freedom and equality. We feel we need to do it. Let’s take courage.”

The Swedish, French and Italian feminists also want to ‘”change current policies and to affirm the rights of women” and through “all forms of struggle and resistance” aim to present a “comprehensive project for society.”
