University lecturers were joined by their students in the streets of Madrid Saturday in a protest against ‘ economic strangulation’
Led by a group of 600 lecturers, the action was against cuts to public universities by regional and central government, and measures that will part privatize universities while leading to the casualization of the workforce.
The protesters held ‘classes’ in streets and squares across the capital in which they sought to educate the public that austerity measures applied by the sleaze-ridden ruling Popular Party put “at risk” both university teaching and research.
The lecturers and students participating in the day’s mobilization also demanded a reversal of the “brutal” rises in tuition fees that are deterring young people from low income families from attending university.
The cuts, deregulation and privatization of the universities come at a time of massive unemployment, deep cuts in social welfare and a 40 billion euro rescue of the country’s banks.
