IN BRIEF / SPAIN
1,000 jobs a day are being lost, with end of year losses showing a collapse in employment spreading from construction to all key sectors of the economy.
In December there were 240,590 more out of work in services, 19,132 more in agriculture, 22,861 more in construction and 17,832 more unemployed in manufacturing.
December figures showed a new record of 4,422,539 jobless.
Comisiones Obreras trade union central called for a change in economic policy: “If measures are taken that cut wages this will only accentuate the crisis in demand and its negative effects on the economic recovery.”
The UGT trade union central, like Comisiones Obreras, rejected plans by Government, backed by employers, to push ahead with labour “reforms” that will make it easier to hire and fire.
