Opposition to austerity escalates in Iberian peninsula amid huge protests

Mass protests took place on the Iberian Peninsula Saturday against deepening austerity measures. In Spain marches and rallies organised by unions and civil society organisations demanded a referendum on the public spending cuts and tax rises and in Portugal some estimates suggest it was the largest popular protest since the revolutionary days of 1974:  Photos, video of day of protest in Spain;  Photos, video of Portugal protests.
