April 25, or Liberation Day, is marked in Italy as the anniversary of the 1945 fall of Mussolini’s fascist state, but for Paolo Ferrero, leader of the Communist Refoundation Party, there was little to celebrate. He commented:
‘On 25 April freedom and democracy were won. Today, with a government of bankers and technocrats and a future decided by the markets, this very democracy and freedom is being destroyed.
Democracy, achieved thanks to the sacrifice of partisans, is still under attack: first by the fascistic Berlusconi, now by the technocrat government of Monti.’
